Track 1, Day 1 – Why Did She leave? – Psychedelic Folk Ballad

“Is there just one special moment that can’t be replaced”

The first track of the LP is the Psychedelic Folk Ballad, Why Did She Leave. I wrote this song in the late 80’s and it was based around the sense of loss that I felt to see my childhood haunts gradually all getting built on with new estates. The “She” actually refers to the old places we used to play and wasn’t meant to be a person but in the end the lyrics turned that way fairly quickly. I thought of how when a relationship first breaks up it can sometimes leave you with an immense sense of loss and you get caught in a grieving cycle.

I think it’s possibly a brave move to open the collection with a down tempo, melancholy song but many people have said it’s their favorite song when I’ve played live so here it is. The music was originally composed on an electric guitar but this recording involved me using Cellos, Acoustic Guitars, Electric Piano and a chilled out drum beat.

To finish the track a friend of a friend offered to recite a Gaelic poem over the ending of the track. I only have her word that it’s a poem about losing love. 🙂

Stuart.

Why Did She Leave?

Look on the bright side

It’s been over for years

Girl grew into woman

All that’s left is the tears

They’ve built on the railway

And on the grass we laid

Another year just flew right by me

How I wished you’d stayed

Why did she leave

Why did she cry

Why did she hide away

Why did she die?

Can you see me in the papers

Oh I see your face

Is there just one special moment

That can’t be replaced
